Instructions for Using the Built-in ELRS Receiver on the SpeedyBee FC
SpeedyBee Flight Controller — Onboard ELRS Feature Guide
This document explains how to use the onboard ELRS receiver feature in the SpeedyBee App, including turning power on/off, entering bind mode with one tap, following transmitter pairing instructions, and updating ELRS firmware.
1. Feature Overview
- Control the onboard ELRS receiver power directly from the app—no plugging/unplugging or disassembly needed.
- One-tap Bind mode for quick pairing with your transmitter.
- Built-in pairing guidance for different ELRS transmitters.
- Update the onboard ELRS receiver firmware to keep stability and performance at their best.
Requirements:
- Your flight controller supports an onboard ELRS receiver and is connected to the SpeedyBee App.
- Phone connection to the FC is stable; the FC is powered (battery or USB recommended).
- Your transmitter uses the ELRS protocol and is broadly version-compatible with the receiver.
2. UI Overview
Open App -> Device -> Onboard ELRS Feature:
Central Power Button: Shows the current “Onboard ELRS Power” status; tap to toggle on/off.
Three actions at the bottom:
- Enter Bind: Puts the receiver into bind mode.
- Transmitter Pairing Guide: Step-by-step pairing instructions for your radio.
- Update ELRS Firmware: Flash/upgrade firmware on the onboard receiver.
3. Quick Start
- Power the flight controller and connect it in the app.
- Enter the “Onboard ELRS Feature” page.
- Tap the central power button to turn “Onboard ELRS Power” on.
- For first-time setup or rebind, tap “Enter Bind,” then open “Transmitter Pairing Guide” and follow the steps for your radio.
- After a successful bind, quickly verify stick inputs before flying.
4. Detailed Steps
1) Turn On/Off Onboard ELRS Power
- On: Tap the power button; status changes to “On.” The receiver powers up and LEDs follow normal ELRS behavior.
- Off: Tap again; status changes to “Off.” Useful for troubleshooting, storage, or reducing heat/power draw.
Notes:
- If toggling fails repeatedly, check FC power, app connection, and permissions; restart the FC or app if needed.
2) One-Tap Bind
- With power “On,” tap “Enter Bind.”
- The receiver enters bind mode (LED typically fast-blinks; refer to ELRS behavior).
- Within 30–60 seconds, follow the “Transmitter Pairing Guide” to start binding on the transmitter.
- When binding succeeds, the receiver LED indicates link status (solid or slow blink), and you should see channel data in the app/OSD/GCS.
Common issues:
- Cannot enter bind: Power-cycle the receiver (off for 5 seconds, then on) and retry; update firmware if needed.
- Band/region mismatch: Ensure the transmitter and receiver match in region and frequency (e.g., 2.4G ELRS).
3) Transmitter Pairing Guide
Tap “Transmitter Pairing Guide” to view steps for your brand/firmware.
Typical flow (for reference; follow the guide page for exact steps):
- On the radio’s ELRS Lua script or system menu, go to Receiver -> Bind.
- Use a modest RF power level for indoor binding, wait for link confirmation.
- Save/exit and verify channels.
4) Update ELRS Firmware
- Ensure the FC is connected, your phone has internet, and power is sufficient.
- Tap “Update ELRS Firmware,” select a target version, and start the update.
- Do not power off or leave the app during the process.
- After completion, it’s recommended to bind again to ensure version compatibility with the transmitter.
Risks & Tips:
- Updates briefly break the link; always test on the bench before flying.
- If an update fails, power-cycle the FC and retry; if it keeps failing, try a lower-speed mode or another cable/power source.
5. Post-Bind Checklist
- Channel inputs: In Betaflight/INAV Receiver tab, confirm Roll/Pitch/Yaw/Throttle respond correctly.
- Failsafe: Configure suitable packet rate, RF power, and failsafe behavior in ELRS; verify on the bench.
- Antenna: Ensure onboard/external antenna is firmly connected and clear of carbon/metal obstructions.
- Output protocol: Confirm FC UART and protocol settings match (CRSF/UART speed). If you used a preset/wizard, this may already be correct.
6. Troubleshooting Quick Reference
App shows “Power Off” and won’t toggle:
- Check FC power and app connection; try rebooting the FC.
Cannot bind:
- Make sure TX and RX ELRS versions are broadly aligned; update both to the same major line if needed.
- Clear old bindings (bind phrase/model profile) on the transmitter and retry.
Bound but no channels:
- Check FC port mapping, receiver protocol (CRSF), and UART enablement.
- Ensure the correct model is selected and the radio isn’t in simulator or output-inhibit mode.
Unstable link/short range:
- Check TX power, packet rate, antenna placement/orientation; avoid carbon or metal shadowing.
- Verify regional settings to avoid underpowered or noncompliant operation.
7. Safety Notes
- Operate ELRS within legal frequency and power limits in your region.
- Perform firmware updates and binding on the bench; remove props or use prop locks.
- Before first flight, run a range test and failsafe test to ensure control and safety.
